South Africa beat India by a massive 214 runs and lifted the Paytm ODI trophy 3-2.
Rahane (87) and Dhawan (60) played some crucial knocks. Dhoni scored 27. No Indian batsmen lived up to the challenge and played some silly shots.
Having won the T20 series (2-0) and ODI series (3-0), South Africa will go into the Test series with much more confidence. This is the second straight bilateral defeat for India having lost to Bangladesh earlier.
Earlier, riding on centuries from captain A B de Villiers, Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis, South Africa went for a batting rampage as they posted a record-high total of 438 for 4 in the fifth and final ODI.
Opener de Kock cracked 109 in 87 balls, du Plessis blasted 133 in 115 balls before retiring hurt while de Villiers smashed 11 sixes in his blistering knock of 119 from just 61 balls to completely destroy the home team bowling attack after South Africa opted to bat on a perfect batting track at Wankhede Stadium.
